About Us

Scissor Kick is a production company that produces live performances across a range of genres - from theatre to contemporary circus, physical theatre to new writing. We champion artists that make observant, transformative and unsettling work.

We apply our skills, knowledge and experience to provide artists with the best producing experience possible to realise the dreams they have for their work. We do this by creating opportunities for audiences and artists through the projects we envision, the co-productions we deliver, and through offering producing services for individuals and organisations on a case by case basis.

Since our inception in 2021, we have produced 3 national tours, made 2 short films, created an international film series in collaboration with artists and project partners across the globe (including the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne!), presented 2 shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as part of the Made in Scotland showcase, translated 3 best selling books (UK charts) into stage adaptations in partnership with the Edinburgh International Book Festival, presented the world premiere of a new show entitled Shrill in a site specific context, and overseen the research & development processes of 6 new works. Outside of this work independent artists have brought us onboard their projects to support their project management needs and provide them with 1-2-1 coaching.

MEET THE Team

stephanie katie hunter (She/her)

Artistic Director

Stephanie Katie Hunter is a producer and theatre maker based in Glasgow, Scotland. Working across art forms and contexts since 2013, highlights of Stephanie’s career include working at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as the Associate (formally Creative) Producer for six years, and independently producing the national and international tour of Drone, the Fringe First winning LipSync for Cumbernauld Theatre Company, and delivering Playing with Tales for The Royal Lyceum Theatre in partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

At the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Stephanie produced the internal and external projects for the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Musical Theatre. During her time in post, she produced 30 musicals, 6 cabaret nights, 8 residencies for writers to development new works, and the institution’s annual New York Industry Week.

Having trained in producing, performance, and facilitation, Stephanie is extremely keen to provide those she collaborates with the space and resources they require to thrive while exploring their artistic visions. As an independent practitioner, she has supported organisations and networks to develop their strategic framework for new projects and leading sector wide change of working environments and standards.

Outside of her work leading Scissor Kick, Stephanie has worked on projects all around the country. Stephanie has overseen the creation and presentation of festivals such as Unfix, Into The New, and On The Verge. She has also been involved in the productions of Glas(s) Performance’s Old Boy, Raw Material’s Glasgow Girls, Indepen-dance’s Four Go Wild in Wellies, and Anna Krzystek’s Untitled #0.5 – Who, What And Where Is Anna

NICOLA LAWTON (she/her)

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER

Nicola is a Glasgow-based Producer whose practice predominantly lies in contemporary circus and theatre.

After taking her youth theatre's work to the New York Fringe Festival in 2001 her passion for theatre and the performing arts was compounded and a love of performance was forged.

She has since been intrinsically linked to the arts in one form or another through youth theatre performances, cabaret, street performance, festivals and finally into producing.

Following a move to Glasgow in 2003 she discovered circus and built connections within the industry after taking up a role with a circus school where she managed events and created life-long relationships with artists.

She started to produce contemporary circus work in 2017 touring across the UK, her career highlights including No Show by Ellie Dubois - winner of the Herald Angela Award (Fringe 2017), Nosedive by Superfan Performance - winner of the Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award (Barbican 2019), and Dreams of the Small Gods by Zinnia Oberski - winner of the Autopsy Award (Summerhall 2022).

Following a period of joint professional development with Stephanie Katie Hunter, Nicola officially joined Scissor Kick as a company director taking up the role of Executive Producer.

What Nicola love's most about her work is giving space to artists to be exactly that, taking the burden of the mechanics of making a show and allowing them to focus on creation.

sophie mcalpine (She/her)

Assistant producer

Sophie’s initial work with Scissor Kick was generously supported by a Federation of Scottish Theatre Producer Placement Bursary with funding from Creative Scotland. She now combines work in the third sector with her work as Assistant Producer for Scissor Kick.

Highlights from the last few years include supporting work on Scotland Through Time, which saw Scissor Kick produce adaptations of contemporary Scottish fiction on behalf of the Edinburgh International Book Festival in August 2022, and Shrill - Scissor Kick’s first foray into the world of site-specific performance, which took place in 2023.

Sophie continues to develop her producing practice with Scissor Kick, and is particularly excited to be working alongside Stephanie and Nicola as they lead sector-wide change in working environments for artists in Scotland.
